Innovation Jockeys contest by Accenture

Accenture and Yahoo have joined hands in India to promote the spirit of innovation in higher education. A program, “Innovation Jockeys - The Hunt for India's Most Innovative Minds” across campuses has been launched by Accenture. In the first edition of this competition, undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students across the country have contributed innovative ideas that will change lives. The theme for the contest is- Everyday Innovations for Home, College and City.

There are more than 1000 entries listed from across colleges. The topics range from effective air conditioning considering heat map of a room to reusable notebooks to traffic control rooms. While this year’s contest is not accepting any more entries, you can always read through some of the proposals, nominate your favourite and maybe, have your ideas and write-up ready for next year’s contest.

Information about the event

WordCamp Cuttack created a huge buzz in India. It went viral on Twitter and became the number one trend of that day. Which means that the most number of people on Twitter were talking about this event only and it broke all past WordCamp's record and became the most tweeted topic by the evening. The event holds immense significance as:

It's the first WordCamp in India where we used video conferencing and two speakers took sessions virtually.
It became the first ever WordCamp to be hosted in Odisha.
This WordCamp event was also listed in the "What-to-do-in-Weekend" email of Infosys and was forwarded to all it's Bhubaneswar employees.

ABIT hosts 14th annual Convention of ISTE Odisha Section

The 14th Annual Convention of ISTE Odisha Section was held on 7th & 8th January 2012 at Ajay Binay Institute of Technology, Cuttack. On this occasion, a seminar on the topic “Technical Education in India-its Impact on Industrial Growth and Social Development” was also organized.

In the Inaugural ceremony, the eminent educationists and academicians like Dr. R. P. Mohanty, Vice Chancellor of SOA University was the Chief Guest, Dr. P. K. Mishra, Former Vice Chairman State Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training as the Guest of Honour and Dr. S. C. Mishra, Former Principal, College of Engineering & Technology, Bhubaneswar was the Key Note Speaker. Dr. S. M. Ali, National Executive Council Member from Odisha Section and Dr. P. K. Parhi, Secretary ISTE Odisha Section also graced the occasion. Ar. K. B. Mohapatra, Director, Ajay Binay Institute of Technology, Er. Satyadarshi Mishra, Head- Governing Board and the Principal, Dr. S. K. Misra, ISTE delegates from ABIT and other sister engineering Institutions of the State were also present on this occasion.

Three technical sessions were arranged where different aspects like, technical education in the globalised world- issues and concerns, need for periodic curriculum reforms as per industrial needs, technical education for modernization and sustenance of industries, industry-institute linkage and partnership, promotion of open universities and distance education, socio scientific convergence and social changes through technical education, etc., were discussed. A proceeding of this discussion was published in the form of a book during the convention.

On the second day, the Annual General Body Meeting of ISTE Members of Odisha Section was conducted. Er. B. C. Pattnayak, the former Chairman of ISTE Odisha Section and the newly elected Chairman of ISTE Odisha Section- Dr. Bimal Sarangi, the members of section managing committee Dr. Achyuta Prasad Mohapatra, DRIEMS, Cuttack, Sk. Riazur Raheman, Rajdhhani Engineering College, Bhubaneswar and Dr. Abhiram Satapathy, Ajay Binay Institute of technology, Cuttack were present. The faculty members of ABIT ISTE Chapter and ISTE members from other colleges were also present in this meeting. Both the Chairs convened the gathering regarding the benefits of being a member of the ISTE through different facilities provided by this largest professional society of India.

The Valedictory function of the convention was organized on 8^th January 2012. The Chief Guest of the function, Dr. L. Nayak, Former Professor NIT, Rourkela and Guest of Honour- Dr. P. K. Sahoo, Former Senior Scientist, Regional Research Laboratory, Bhubaneswar graced the ceremony, Former Chairaman of ISTE Odisha Section. Dr. B. C. Pattnayak and Dr. Bimal Sarangi, the newly elected Chairman of ISTE Odisha Section, and the members of section managing committee were also present along with the Director, Head- Governing Board, Principal and Members of the Organising Committee.

This convention at Ajay Binay Institute of Technology was a great success in assembling a healthy participation of ISTE members. The deliberations at the seminar were instrumental in inspiring research attitude among the delegates. The speech of Dr. Bimal Sarangi, Chairman ISTE (2012-2014) on ISTE projects for students was vital as he oriented and inspired them for active participation in ISTE activities. The two day convention was a grand success with active involvement of ISTE office bearers, ISTE delegates under the support extended by the management of the Host Institution.

Seminar on Lean Management organized by ISTE Chapter

A seminar was organized by the ISTE Chapter of ABIT on the topic “ The Impact of Lean Management on Business Level Performance and Competitiveness” on 19^th August 2011 at ABIT. Sri S.K.BHUYAN, Lean Management Consultant and Ex-DGM Tata Motors was the speaker of the Seminar.

The topic was based on different aspects of managing an organization. The four perspectives of balanced score card like financial perceptive, internal perspectives, customer perspectives and innovation and learning perspectives and other business performance measure and indicators were discussed in the seminar. At the end vote of thanks was given the chapter co-ordinator Mr. Abhiram Satapathy requested all the head of the departments to organize such seminars every week for the improvement of the teaching-learning process of the faculty members.

New battery design by MIT could be perfect solution for electric vehicles

A group of Massachusetts Institute of Technology students may have come up with the perfect solution to our electric vehicles. Instead of relying on lithium or nickel, the new battery design stores its electrons in semi-solid flow cells. Charged particles are suspended in an electrolyte solution and pumped between compartments used for storing or releasing energy. The tech supposedly makes the batteries up to ten times more efficient than their traditional counterparts, and even more importantly, the new tech is cheaper to produce. Estimates say that the design could cut the size and expense of current batteries by as much as 50 percent.

AICTE sponsored Staff Development Programme on Environment and Waste Management

Ajay Binay Institute of Technology, Cuttack organized an AICTE sponsored Staff Development Programme on Environment and Waste Management from 25^th May to 07^th June 2011.

The scheme, Staff Development Programme is operated by the Research, Institutional and Faculty Development bureau of All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). The programme is intended to provide opportunities through AICTE approved staff colleges and Institutions for induction training to teachers employed in AICTE approved Technical Institutions to facilitate up gradation of knowledge and skill. The expected outcome are promoting quality of teachers, facilitated career and faculty development.

The inaugural session of the programme was held on 25^th May 2011 at 10.30 A.M. in the auditorium of ABIT. Chief Guest Shri Sudhanshu Bhushan Mishra, IAS, (Retd.) Former Chief Secretary to Govt. Of Odissa, inaugurated the programme. Ar. K.B. Mohapatra, Director,ABIT Group of Institutions presided over the meeting. Dr.(Mrs.) Bijoya Mishra, Former Principal, Rama Devi Women’s (Autonomous) College, Bhubaneswar was the Guest of Honour. Dr.(Mrs.) P.R. Mishra, Director (Academic), ABIT spoke to the audience about the programme. Dr. S.K. Misra, Principal, ABIT gave the welcome address. Dr. S.N. Pattnaik Professor of Chemistry ABIT and the coordinator of the programme introduced the Guests on the dias and presented the objectives of the programme and the theme of the topic. Prof. (Dr.) B.K. Mohapatra, Former Chairman, Council of Higher Secondary Education, Bhuabneswar, delivered the keynote address. Dr. B.N. Guru, Head, Deptt. Of Chemistry, ABIT proposed a vote of thanks, 20 teachers from different institutes participated in the programme. Each day except Sundays there were two sessions. Eighteen Resource persons from various fields like teaching, industry, Govt. Deptts., Pollution Control Board, IIT etc. were invited on different days to deliver their talks. The presentation of each resource person was extremely good and of high standard. Three participants also gave presentations on different topics. On Sundays during this 2 week programme, visit to some management sites was conducted to acquire practical knowledge.

The valedictory session of the programme was held at 2.30 P.M. on 7^th June, 2011 in the auditorium. Shri S.Praveen Kumar, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cuttack was the Chief Guest. In the end the certificates of participation were distributed

Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) at ABIT

EDC was established in the year 2009 at Ajay Binay Institute of Technology (ABIT), Cuttack with the grant-in-aid of Rs.8,00,000/- from AICTE, New Delhi. Through various motivational activities EDC is trying to inculcate the culture of entrepreneurship among the budding engineers. It conducts the following programmes regularly.

Enterprise Awareness Programme (EAP)

Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP)

Expert Talk on various management process

Skill Development Programmes (SDP)

Till date the cell has undertaken 11 consultancy projects, 5 of these are at various stages of progress and 4 have not provided desired outcome. But there are 2 success stories, which are significant and inspiring for future activities at the EDC cell in ABIT:

1.       Revival of Silicon Software, Bhubaneswar

Silicon software became unviable with severe ROI issues. The entrepreneurship cell worked with this small technology firm to focus on creating websites for the jewellery sector. (Earlier the company was working on a set of diverse sectors – hotels, hospitals and travels.) With greater sector focus and technical assistance to bring in hosted model, local support and quick customization – the company came back to profitability in a span of a year.

2.       Establishment of bell metal vessel (Kansha) factory with appropriate quality control

Sri Soumya Ranjan Prusty, a student of ABIT wanted to revive an ageing family owned metal manufacturing unit that was struggling to survive. After implementing changes in the manufacturing process, better melting practice and more stringent quality control with suggestion from a group of students & faculty members, it is now a thriving business.

We are hoping increase awareness to get greater participation from student and faculty community in coming year and that is the intention of this blog post. Mr. Chinmay Das, Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering, is in charge of EDC. Dr Patitapabana Mishra centre of Scientific & Industrial research established at ABIT

ABIT has setup this research centre is to promote research activities among the faculties and students at ABIT.

The centre has been named as “Patitapaban Mishra Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research” in the honour of Dr. Patitapaban Mishra, Senior Scientist and Ex- Principal Khallikote College, Berhampur who has contributed a lot to the research activities in the field of Plasma Physics.

A.    OPENDELIGHT - THE OPEN SOURCE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT (from April 2011)

B. ULTRASONIC METHOD OF STUDY OF PROPERTIES OF LIQUID MIXTURES (from March 2011)

In the first phase Department of Physics has installed a multi-frequency ultrasonic interferometer as Ultrasonic method (determination of ultrasonic velocity) is a powerful probe for characterizing the physiochemical properties and existence of molecular interaction in liquid mixtures (binary and ternary). It also enables the determination of acoustical and thermodynamic parameters and excess parameters of all the above parameters which are more sensitive towards the intermolecular interaction.

Number of studies on thermodynamic and acoustics properties such as Intermolecular free length, Isoentropic compressibility, Acoustic impedance, Molar volume, coefficient of thermal expansion, Isothermal compressibility, Ratios of specific heat, Viscosity etc., of multi component liquid mixture has increased in recent years due to industrial application and the theoretical interest in studying the nature of molecular interaction and packing phenomena in ternary mixtures. This method (Ultrasonic) has also been extended to the study of human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Ultrasonic study of carbohydrates/saccharides has also become a subject of increasing interest because of their multidimensional, physical and biochemical applications. This has also been applied to Aerospace Engineering, Carbon Nano-tubes, and Nuclear Energy Industries.

Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) was founded in the year 1967 with a mission to advance for the cause of education in general and all its function which pertain to engineering and allied branches of engineering and technology, architecture and town planning, pharmacy, management, process of teaching and learning, research, extension services and public relations in particular.

Rational Seed Program at ABIT

In an effort to provide a selection of platform for engineering students to improve their industry orientation, ABIT has entered into an agreement with IBM for Rational SEED program.

Rational SEED program authorizes the use of Rational Suite Enterprise and Rational Software Architect for non commercial purpose. This program will be implemented by Webtech Labs, a partner of IBM, responsible for rolling out the Rational SEED program in universities. Faculty training on the listed IBM tools is scheduled in third week of May 2011.

The software and concepts will familiarize students with complete Software Development Lifecycle starting with software modeling & Architecture to software testing and software configuration management.

ABIT to participate in Open Source development project on PHP Web application framework involving cloud deployment and multi device access

ABIT joins the cutting-edge open source software development project on PHP Web Application Framework, Opendelight, a project created and supported by ADII (www.adiipl.com/opendelight). The framework encompasses the multi-tier architecture of web, and enables enterprise-grade web application development really fast and easy. The current project under the project plan 2011 (http://www.adiipl.com/opendelight/opendelight-project-plan-2011.pdf) involves extensions and enhancements of the existing version of the framework. The enhancements are related to improving usability parameters to reduce development cycle with Opendelight IDE. This will involve:

Creating an intelligent dashboard on Opendelight IDE for monitoring development status real-time

Integrating with different cloud systems for one-click deployment of applications from Opendelight IDE

Building new libraries within Opendelight framework

Developing and integrating an improved data grid within the application created with Opendelight framework

Research as a career option - An interview with ABIT alumni Gaurav Jayaswal

Mr. Gaurav Jayaswal B. Tech of 2009 batch, who has done us proud by winning several accolades in the field of Science and technology. He has been awarded “Physics Young Ambassador” by Indian Physics Association at BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre). This blog post is based on an interview by Prof Abhiram Satpathy.

Q             Where did you get the inspiration to get involved in research work from the very first year of your B.Tech course.

Gaurav: Since my school days I was always interested in science exhibition. I was involved in making small scientific projects and models in my school days. One of the models titled “Hydel Power Station” was selected for the 1^st prize. After the end of my 1^st semester, I started research activities and was supported by my seniors especially Anup Pandey, Karan Deep Joshi, Deepti Singh and Shabana Praveen. Moreover, I got a chance to enroll myself in Institute of Physics, under the guidance of the physics department at ABIT.

Q.            As an ENTC student who had lot of opportunities in industry but why did you opt for research.

Gaurav: I wanted to make my small but a significant contribution in the field of science and technology which can be helpful for a common man and to the defense of the country.

Q             What is your present assignment and how do you find your future in the present assignment.

Gaurav: Presently I am working as a research fellow at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (Dept. of Atomic Energy, Govt of India) on “Nano-Photonics”.I will like to go for my P.HD in this field. I have been selected for my P.HD by University of Cambridge(U.K),I am just waiting for the fellowship

Q.            What was your achievement during your education at this college

Gaurav : Well, by God’s grace I was awarded lot of prizes during my B.Tech course. But one of my important achievement is that, I have taken a tiny but a permanent position in the heart of all the faculty members and the staff members and also in the heart of juniors and seniors.

My B.Tech project was selected as the Best B.Tech project in the country by Indian Society of Technical Education. I was also awarded “Physics Young Ambassador” by Indian Physics Association at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.

I was selected for international internship program by National University of Singapore. I was also selected for summer program by University of Waterloo Canada.

Q.            How did the faculty at ABIT help you in your research work.

Gaurav: Faculty at ABIT was always there to help and guide me. I am thankful to each and every faculty and staff members of this college. I am indebted to Abhiram sir who was always there to help me from the first day of my college. He was always there to guide me and help me in my difficulties. I am also thankful to all the faculty members of my department(ENTC), which is considered to be the best department in Orissa. Special thanks to Prof. S.K. Mal, S.K. Mohaptra (H.O.D.,ENTC), Debakanta Behera, Subhalaxmi Mam, Akankshya Mam, Mousmi Mam, Betty Mam, Abinash Sir, Guru Sir, Prof R.K. Sahoo (H.O.D,Mech),Prof Chinmaya Pattnaik (H.O.D. Comp) and Ramesh sir. I am especially thankful to the library committee who had helped me a lot in carrying out my research activities .I was able to issue the books even though they were not the part of our regular studies

Q          As a student from St.Xavier’s School H.Bagh, why did you choose A.B.I.T. out of several colleges in orissa.

Gaurav: I had given couple of engineering entrance exams for the year 2005 and Orissa JEE was also among these exams. My role was over after giving the exam and I was just waiting for the result. I just asked God to send me to a college that would be good for my future. Hence it was the God wish that today I ‘m part of A.B.I.T. family.

Q             What is your opinion regarding the presents scenario of technical education of India.

Gaurav:   Technical education in India has improved but still there are certain areas especially in fabrication and application sector, where we need to improve a lot.

Q             Tell something about your family and how your family supported you to enter yourself in the research work.

Gaurav: My family members are my biggest strength and I am especially very much thankful to my late grandmother, what I am today is just because of her blessings and sacrifice. I dedicate all my honor and award to her. I am also very much thankful to my parents who allowed me to choose research as my career and I am also thankful to my grandfather, uncle, brothers and sisters.

Q             What are your hobbies and strengths.

Gaurav : I love music, playing football and writing poems. My strength is that I am very friendly in nature and hence I can easily make friends.

A visit to Infosys Bhubaneswar

Six entrepreneurs along with the dreams and principles of Mr. Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy made a small Investment of Rs. 10, 000 or merely 250 Dollar to establish Infosys Consultants Pvt Ltd on July 2^nd, 1981 and 29 years later Infosys is a NASDAQ listed global consulting and IT services company with more than 127,000 employees. From a capital of US$ 250, it has grown to become a US$ 5.73 billion (LTM Dec-10 revenues) company with a market capitalization of approximately US$ 43 billion and over 33 countries.

Hence undoubtedly it has become the dream of every innovator and engineer grad who loves IT, to be a part of this organization. Even to be at the Infosys campus is a dream accomplished for every engineering student and via the Spark initiative of Infosys us at ABIT were amongst those lucky lads to spend a day at Infosys. Hence I hope I don’t fumble in my words when I talk about my dream accomplished to you, we were all set to info city by the early hour of the auspicious day 22^ndJanuary, 2011 and reached info city Bhubaneswar at around 9 am,” it is said first impression lasts long”, the first impression on seeing the campus just from its premises was; Vishwakarma had made it all by himself, yes indeed it was a true magnificence of modern architecture. At the gates the perfect security system with more than 100 security personnel’s guarding the sanctity of the heaven of technology Infosys. We were guided to the ECC section of Infosys for spark to commence, on the way we were handed cute little bags and notepads to make a note of the findings of the program, but as I entered the ECC section or (the recreation centre for the members of Infosys family) I almost lost my senses seeing the size and the class of arrangement, it was this one huge space with somewhat maple wood flooring and we were seated at the centre in front of a huge screen in which the data’s were reflected and the program commenced with an infocity video which actually got me spellbound. Spark is a program which raises aspiration and it did raise my aspiration from the very first video, then at about 9:15 am started the session of realizing the dreams of the students present in the program, as aspiration rises from dreams we discussed our most cherished to the wackiest of dreams, but we learnt that it is only by dreaming big we can achieve the cherished dreams, for an instance I always dreamt of making Infosys a part of me so now I dream of making Microsoft a part of me and I realized one thing that only when I dream big I work much harder towards my dream, so thank you spark.

The next session was taken by Mr. Gaurav who gave us an idea of understanding the relevance of IT in business and the importance of IT in finding solutions to the problems of business well in fact the presentation was so informative that I learnt that IT is not just about computers or only a subject its beyond the perceptions of common man as well as it is only a product of, for and by the common man, well the truth is that its only at Infosys that you understand the value of what you learn. The work culture is so pure in the campus of Infosys. Well hope the session could have continued but it was time for tea and at 10:45 and the session got over we were back again at the hall at 11 am and again we were discussing about our dreams, the next session began and it was understanding the importance of project development it was a great interactive session taken by Mr. Debi here we discussed the minor detailing about a project to the visualization of Chaos Theory, this session made us understand the importance of minute detailing of a problem statement and providing the best services as per the requirement and once again I would say it was only possible at Infosys that all of us were so clear about the concepts, then we raised numerous questions related to the sessions and Infosys activities and we got apt answers that cleared all our doubts and removed all the dust from our growing brain.

Now that the above session was over it was time for quizzing a host of general questions ranging from the history of Infosys to the advent of apple was asked were all the students gave numerous answers mostly correct some wrong, then we played a fun game in which we counted from 1 to 20 mixing English and Hindi, after this session we were taken on a trip of the campus as I already mentioned it was a true species of magnificent architecture, we saw the huge campus and I can explain this by seeing it was just like a city with scrapers, shopping malls, food-counters, cricket and recreational grounds, the very famous machu-pichu. Then we were guided to the food court and had a hearty healthy lunch which suggested the true class of info-city.

Then finally our journey or dreams in the campus was over we had a group photo and left the campus with hopes held high in our hearts that somewhere down the line, some of us will be here to live the dream and experience the essence, the spirit and fragrance of Infosys. As I left the campus with tear filled eyes with joy that one of my childhood dreams finally realized, I dint turn back because Infosys has made me believe in my dreams, spark has truly raised my aspiration, it has made me understand that the art of observing influencing and succeeding, so I don’t look back in the hope that the next time I look back towards this campus I would be a part of it.

Finally my realization that Infosys truly stands to the principles set by Mr. Narayana murthy and stands to the standards it sets for itself, it rises to newer horizons and makes everyone associated with it rise to the next horizon, Pray it continues to grow.

Congratulation Abhijeet - For getting MTA Level - 1 certification with high scores

Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) Level-1 certification examination was conducted at ABIT on 22-Jan. Certiport, an international certification agency authorized to conduct this examination on behalf of Microsoft conducted the online Test.

Abhijeet Patra from Final Year Computer Science department topped the test securing 85% in the test. Please join me in congratulating Abhijeet for getting MTA Level-1 Certified.
